Not illustrated. 1888 Excerpt: ...three weeks ago some sixteen others were initiated into the mystic circle. These 22 are of two classes, the privileges of which differ somewhat. Class I.--Those (eight in number) which are compelled to sell stamps and all kinds of Government stationery, in large and small quantities; to issue as well as pay money orders and postal notes; to receive and distribute all kinds of mail matter on Sundays sent to them from the general office, which then in turn is closed at 10 o'clock for the day, while the poor druggist has to be bothered in handing same out to callers till 10.30 at night. To give bond for $2000 to carry always a valued stock in Btamps of $400, and for all this the attached annual salary is $100. Class II.--Those (sixteen in number) which sell only stamps must carry stock of stamps to amount of $400, and for this the yearly amount received is $24, which is simply the interest on their money as invested in the stamps. Now, how much cash value work does one of these establishments do for the Government? I will tell you straight as I gleaned it. My friend last year took in over his counter $40,000. Of this amount $l;l,000 was the entire sum he received from everything sold in the way of drugs, cigars, soda water, &c. The other $27,000 was for the post office--$15,000 for stamps aud $8000 for money orders and postal notes. This reminds one of the druggist's trade burlesqued in the Rag Baby. Alas! where comes in the quid pro quo compensation? Too true, it is all in glory. Just think, how can it be possible, in lieu of that small pittauce, that a druggist of ordinary thought could consent to give bond to bocome responsible for the correct manipulation of $27,000; to make good all deficits that are bound to occur from the numerous times in making ch...
